Rotate PDF pages and save

Rotate PDF pages by 90 degrees in the thumbnail sidebar and the new orientation is written into the file when you click Download. Drop the PDF above; it opens in the viewer in this tab, nothing is uploaded.

How to rotate PDF pages

Rotation lives in the page thumbnails on the left, not in the main toolbar, because it is a per-page operation: a scanned stack often has one sideways sheet in the middle and the rest are fine.

  1. Open the PDF with the drop box above or the Open a PDF button.
  2. Find the sideways page in the thumbnail sidebar. Click it to jump to it in the main view.
  3. Use the thumbnail's rotate control to turn the page 90°. Click again for 180° or 270°.
  4. Repeat for any other pages that need it.
  5. Click Download. The rotation is saved into the PDF's page objects, not just the display.

That last point is the difference between this and the rotate button in most viewers. Chrome, Edge and the built-in phone viewers rotate the view and forget it when you close the file. Here the download carries the rotation permanently; the longer walkthrough is at rotate PDF and save.

How the rotated PDF behaves in other readers

A PDF page has a Rotate attribute that any compliant reader honors. The viewer sets that attribute via pdf-lib, so the page opens upright in Acrobat, Preview, Firefox, Chrome, and on iPhone and Android. Nothing is re-rendered or resampled: text stays selectable, images keep their resolution, and the file size barely changes.

If you later print the file, the printer driver sees the rotated orientation too. Highlights or drawings you added are rotated together with the page content, since they are attached to the page.

Limits and things to check

  • 90° steps only. Rotation is in quarter turns. A scan that is crooked by three degrees needs deskewing, which the viewer does not do; Acrobat's Scan & OCR tool or a scanner app can straighten it.
  • Rotate before OCR. If the page is a scan, run OCR after rotating, so the text recognizer sees upright letters.
  • Password-locked files. A PDF that needs a password to open will not load. A PDF that merely blocks editing opens fine; if the restriction gets in the way, use Remove Restrictions.
  • Nothing is uploaded. All of it happens in the browser tab, which also means a 500-page scan on a phone may be slow. On a laptop that same file is fine.

Rotate a PDF with other tools

ToolRotate and keep it
Adobe AcrobatOrganize Pages, select pages, rotate buttons, then save
Preview on macOSSelect thumbnails, Tools > Rotate Left/Right, then save
Chrome / EdgeRotates the view only; to keep it, Print > Save as PDF after rotating
PDFsam BasicRotate module, choose pages, run
qpdfqpdf in.pdf --rotate=+90:3 out.pdf rotates page 3
Smallpdf, iLovePDFUpload, rotate, download; the file is processed on their servers

The Chrome trick works but re-prints the file, which can drop bookmarks and the text layer of a scanned PDF. Setting the Rotate attribute, as the viewer and qpdf do, keeps everything else intact. Compare the two approaches on PDF Viewer vs the Chrome PDF viewer.

Fixing scans that came out sideways or upside down

Scanners are the usual source of rotation problems, and the pattern tells you what to do:

  • Every page is sideways. The paper was fed in landscape. Rotate each page once in the same direction. For a long document this is repetitive in any thumbnail-based tool; qpdf's --rotate=+90 without a page list does all pages in one go.
  • Every other page is upside down. A duplex scanner read the back sides flipped. Rotate the even pages by 180°, i.e. two quarter turns each.
  • One page in the middle. Someone fed a single sheet the wrong way. Rotate that page only, which is exactly what the sidebar is for.
  • The page looks upright but text is tilted. That is skew, not rotation. A scanner app with auto-deskew, or re-scanning, is the fix.

On a phone or tablet the same controls work by touch in the sidebar. For a thick scan, though, do the rotating on a laptop and only read the result on the phone; thumbnails for hundreds of pages are heavy on mobile memory. The guide what is a scanned PDF explains why scans behave differently from exported PDFs in the first place.

Frequently asked questions

How do I rotate a PDF and save it?

Open the PDF in the viewer, rotate the page from its thumbnail in the sidebar, then click Download. The rotation is written into the downloaded file.

Why does my PDF go back to sideways after rotating?

Most viewers rotate only the on-screen view. You need a tool that writes the rotation into the file, such as this viewer's Download, Acrobat, Preview or qpdf.

Can I rotate just one page of a PDF?

Yes. Rotation is per page in the thumbnail sidebar; the other pages are left as they are.

How to rotate a PDF on Mac?

Open it in this viewer in Safari or Chrome and rotate from the sidebar, or use Preview: select the page thumbnails and choose Tools > Rotate.

Does rotating a PDF reduce quality?

No. Only the page's rotation attribute changes; text and images are not re-rendered.

Can I rotate a PDF without Adobe Acrobat?

Yes: this browser viewer, Preview on macOS, PDFsam Basic and qpdf all rotate pages and save the result without Acrobat.
