Free PDF viewer for Mac that runs in your browser
This PDF viewer for Mac runs in Safari, Chrome or Firefox, so there is nothing to install and nothing to update. It opens the file locally, adds OCR, unlocking and merging on top of what Preview does, and saves a normal PDF.
What this PDF editor for Mac does, free
Every Mac already has Preview, so a browser-based PDF viewer for Mac has to earn its place. It does that with tools Preview does not have: OCR for scanned pages, removing print and copy restrictions, and merging files by appending one PDF to another. Everything runs in the browser tab with no account and no watermark.
- View: drag the file in or use the file picker, page thumbnails, zoom, a hand tool, search inside the text with next/previous match, dark or light theme, document properties.
- Annotate: highlight in seven colors, draw freehand, add text, insert a PNG or JPG, place a drawn signature, add a sticker, cover content with a whiteout box, erase an annotation, undo and redo.
- Pages: rotate by 90 degrees, delete, reorder by dragging thumbnails, add a blank page at the end, merge by appending another PDF.
- OCR: turn a scanned PDF into a searchable one by adding an invisible text layer, so search and copy work.
- Unlock: remove owner-password restrictions (printing, copying, editing locks) from a PDF that opens without asking for a password.
- Save: Download writes a new PDF with your annotations, page changes and OCR layer embedded. Cyrillic and Arabic text is embedded with its font.
Private: the PDF never leaves your Mac
Nothing is uploaded. The PDF is read by JavaScript inside the tab, and all editing, OCR and saving happen on your Mac. Close the tab and the document is gone from the browser. The only downloads are the OCR engine and its language data, fetched once from a CDN; the document itself never goes anywhere.
That matters when the file is a signed contract, a medical record or a legal brief. Upload-based PDF sites keep a copy on their servers for some period, and many workplace and client agreements do not allow that. A viewer that processes the file locally is closer to Preview in that respect than to an online converter. The privacy page spells out exactly what loads from where.
How to edit a PDF on Mac in three steps
- Open. Drag the PDF from Finder onto the drop zone above, or click it and choose the file. It renders in the same tab.
- Edit. Pick a tool from the toolbar: Highlight, Draw, Text, Image, Signature, Sticker, Whiteout, Eraser, OCR, Remove Restrictions or Merge. Use the thumbnails on the side to rotate, delete or drag pages.
- Save. Click Download. The new PDF lands in your Downloads folder (or wherever your browser is set to save), and the original stays untouched.
For a signature specifically, see how to add a signature to a PDF on Mac, which compares this with Preview's trackpad signature.
Mac specifics: Safari, Chrome, Intel and Apple Silicon
Safari, Chrome and Firefox on macOS all work. Because it is a web page rather than an app bundle, there is no Intel or Apple Silicon build to pick and nothing in Gatekeeper to approve. The same URL behaves the same on an older MacBook Air and a current Mac Studio; only OCR speed changes with the processor.
Printing uses the browser's print dialog, so the familiar macOS print sheet appears with your printers and the Save as PDF option. The file picker is the standard macOS open sheet, which means iCloud Drive and external drives are reachable. Search in the viewer is on the toolbar, and the shortcuts accept the Mac modifier too: Cmd+F to search, Cmd+Z to undo, Cmd+Y to redo.
What it cannot do on a Mac
The viewer is honest about its limits. It will not open a PDF that requires a password to open; it shows a "This PDF is password-protected" message and you need to remove the password elsewhere first (Preview can export an unlocked copy once you know the password). Fillable form fields display but cannot be typed into as fields; add text on top instead. It does not convert PDF to Word or images, does not compress, and does not change words in the original text layer, only covers them and adds new text.
Very large scans of hundreds of pages can be slow, because every page is rendered in browser memory. For those, Preview or Acrobat on a desktop handles the load better.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a free PDF editor for Mac without installing anything?
Yes. This viewer runs in Safari or Chrome, so you open the page, drop the PDF and edit. No download, no account, no watermark.
Can I OCR a PDF on Mac for free?
Yes. The OCR tool recognizes the text in the browser and adds a hidden text layer so you can search and copy. It takes tens of seconds per page on a laptop, so it suits short scans.
How do I unlock a PDF on Mac?
If the PDF opens but blocks printing or copying, Remove Restrictions strips those locks. If it asks for a password to open, the viewer cannot help; remove the password with Preview or Acrobat first.
Does it work in Safari?
Yes, Safari, Chrome and Firefox on macOS are all supported.
Does it run on Apple Silicon Macs?
It runs on any Mac that runs a current browser, Intel or Apple Silicon, since it is a web page and not a native app.
Is it better than Preview?
Preview is better for form filling and huge files. This viewer adds OCR, restriction removal and a browser workflow that is identical on every Mac. Use whichever fits the task.
