How to rearrange PDF pages

The thumbnail sidebar is the page organizer. Every page is a draggable card, so moving page 7 to the front is the same motion as sorting photos.

1. Open the PDF with the drop box above or Open a PDF.
2. In the sidebar, press and hold the thumbnail of the page you want to move.
3. Drag it up or down to its new position and release. The page numbers update immediately.
4. Keep dragging until the sequence is right. Click a thumbnail at any time to view that page full size and confirm.
5. Click Download. The rearranged order is written into the new PDF.

Dragging combines well with the other sidebar actions: turn a sideways page with rotate, drop a blank with delete, and move the rest into order in the same session. Nothing is saved until you download, so you can experiment freely.

When reordering comes up

Typical cases where a page sequence goes wrong and a drag fixes it:

• A duplex scanner produced pages in 1, 3, 5, 2, 4, 6 order, or the back sides came out reversed.
• You merged two PDFs and the cover letter ended up at the back. Merge appends to the end, so the fix is to drag the new pages forward; see merge PDF.
• An appendix must move before the signature page for a filing.
• Slides exported from a deck need a different sequence for the handout.

In every case the content of the pages is untouched. Only the page tree of the PDF changes, so text stays searchable and images keep their quality. Any reader, including Acrobat and the iPhone Files app, shows the new order.

Limits

• One page per drag. There is no multi-select to move a block of ten pages at once. Reversing a long document page by page is tedious; for that, qpdf's page syntax is quicker (below).
• No cross-document drag. You cannot drag a page from one PDF into another. Use Merge to bring the second document in, then drag.
• No extract to a new file. Reordering happens inside the document. To pull a range into its own PDF, delete the rest and download, or use a split tool.
• Memory on phones. Thumbnails for a 300-page scan take memory. On a laptop that is fine; on a phone it may be slow.

Reorder PDF pages with other tools

If the PDF is a form with fillable fields, be aware the viewer shows fields but does not edit them. Reordering is fine, but if you also need to fill the form, see fill out a PDF form.

Fixing a duplex scan that came out in the wrong order

A single-sided scanner used for double-sided paper produces the classic mess: you scan all the fronts (1, 3, 5), flip the stack, scan all the backs (6, 4, 2), and the file reads 1, 3, 5, 6, 4, 2. Here is a way to sort it in the sidebar without losing track.

1. Count the pages. Half are fronts, in order, at the top of the sidebar; half are backs, reversed, at the bottom.
2. Take the last thumbnail (page 2 of the paper) and drag it to the second position, right under page 1.
3. Take the new last thumbnail (page 4) and drag it under page 3. Continue: the last page always goes under the next odd page.
4. Click through the first few pages in the main view to confirm the text flows, then Download.

If the backs came out upside down as well, rotate them twice each from the thumbnail before downloading. For stacks of more than about 40 sheets, this is quicker on a laptop with a mouse than on a touch screen.
