Smallpdf alternative: edit PDFs in the browser without uploading
The most common reasons people look for a Smallpdf alternative are the free-task limit, the account prompt, and the fact that every file is uploaded to a server. This viewer removes all three for annotating, signing, OCR, merging and page edits, and it is honest about the tasks where Smallpdf still has the tool and it does not: conversion, compression and text editing.
How Smallpdf works, and where the friction is
Smallpdf is a collection of single-purpose web tools: pick a tool, upload a PDF, wait for the server to process it, download the result. The processing happens on Smallpdf's infrastructure, and the files are deleted after a retention period described in its policy. The free tier allows a limited number of tasks per day; beyond that you are asked to create an account and subscribe. There is also a desktop app with a similar paywall.
That model is fine for a quick one-off conversion. It is awkward when you have twelve files to rotate, when the document is a medical record or a client contract, or when you are on a slow connection and the file is a 90 MB scan. A tool that runs inside the browser tab solves those cases: nothing to upload, nothing to count against a quota.

Tasks you can move to the browser viewer today
Everything on this list runs locally in the tab and produces a new PDF on Download:
- Annotate: highlight in seven colors, draw, add text and images, stickers, whiteout, eraser, undo and redo.
- Sign: draw your signature once, place it where needed.
- OCR: make a scan searchable with tesseract.js, language picked from your browser (English by default). This is a paid feature on Smallpdf and a free one here, with the caveat that a long scan takes tens of seconds per page.
- Merge, rotate, delete and reorder pages, add a blank page.
- Remove restrictions from a file that opens but will not print or copy.
No account, no counter. Open as many files as you like; the practical limit is your browser's memory, which matters only for scans of hundreds of pages.
Tasks where Smallpdf (or another tool) still wins
Conversion is the big one. Turning a PDF into Word, Excel, PowerPoint or JPG, or the reverse, is not something this viewer does. Smallpdf does, and so do Microsoft Word, LibreOffice and the print dialog; see PDF to Word for the free routes. Compression is the second: Smallpdf's compressor re-encodes images; the viewer has no compressor, so use the options listed here.
Smallpdf's editor also edits existing text and fills form fields; the viewer only lets you cover and retype, and shows form fields without making them fillable. Its eSign product adds a sending workflow with an audit trail, which a drawn signature image cannot replace when a counterparty needs proof. And true redaction, where the text underneath is removed, is a Smallpdf paid feature and not available here at all.
Privacy: the upload question
Smallpdf is a legitimate company with a published security page, encryption in transit and automatic deletion. Even so, uploading means the document exists, briefly, on a computer you do not control, and many company policies and client agreements forbid that outright for personal data, HR files, legal matters and unreleased financials.
With this viewer the question does not arise. pdf.js draws the page in your tab, pdf-lib writes the downloaded file on your device, and the OCR engine's language data is the only thing fetched from a CDN; the PDF itself never leaves the browser. Closing the tab removes it. That is why the viewer is a reasonable default for sensitive files even when a cloud tool has a richer feature list; the privacy page states the details.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a free alternative to Smallpdf?
For annotating, signing, OCR, merging, page edits and unlocking, this browser viewer is free with no daily limit and no account. For conversion and compression, Smallpdf, iLovePDF, PDF24 and LibreOffice are the usual free options.
What is the daily limit on Smallpdf?
Smallpdf allows a small number of free tasks per day before asking you to sign up or subscribe; the exact number is set by Smallpdf and changes over time.
Does Smallpdf upload my files?
Yes, the web tools process files on Smallpdf's servers and delete them after a retention period. This viewer processes files inside your browser and never uploads them.
Can I merge PDFs without Smallpdf?
Yes. Open the first file here, click Merge, pick the second file, and it is appended; reorder with the thumbnails and download. No upload, no limit.
Can I compress a PDF with this viewer?
No. Compression is not supported. Use Preview on Mac, PDF24, Smallpdf or iLovePDF; the compress PDF guide compares them.
Which is better, Smallpdf or iLovePDF?
They are very similar web services with comparable tools and limits. If you only need markup, signing, OCR or page edits, you can skip both and work locally in this viewer.
