PDF viewer online: open a PDF free

This PDF viewer online opens a file the instant you drop it, in your own browser tab, with no account and no upload. Read, search and zoom, then highlight, sign, whiteout, OCR, merge and download the result, all with the same file never leaving your device.

Drop a PDF to open itor click to choose. It opens in the viewer on this site, nothing is uploaded.Free, no account, no watermark. The file stays in this browser tab.

How to open a PDF online

  1. Drag the PDF into the box above, or click it to use the file picker. On the home page the button is Open a PDF.
  2. The document renders in the tab. The thumbnail sidebar on the left lists the pages; click one to jump.
  3. Read with zoom in/out and the hand tool to drag the page. Press Ctrl+F to search.
  4. If you change anything, click Download to save a new copy. Your original file is not modified.

It also works from the web: the Chrome extension opens PDF links from any site directly in this viewer instead of the built-in one. Details are on the Chrome extension page. If you came from a search for "open pdf online free", this is it: nothing to sign up for.

What this PDF viewer online does

The toolbar is the full feature list. Each tool has its own page with steps and limits.

GroupTools
ReadingThumbnails, Search with next/previous, zoom, hand tool, document properties, dark/light theme, Print
AnnotatingHighlight in seven colors, Draw, Text, Image (PNG/JPG), Sticker, Eraser, undo/redo
Signing and redactingSignature (draw, then place), Whiteout box
PagesRotate 90°, delete, drag to reorder, add a blank page, Merge another PDF
Scans and locksOCR to make scans searchable, Remove Restrictions for print/copy locks
SavingDownload writes a new PDF with all edits embedded; Unicode text (Cyrillic, Arabic) included

Under the hood: pdf.js renders the pages, pdf-lib writes the changes, tesseract.js does the OCR. All three are JavaScript libraries that run in the tab, which is what makes the next section possible.

Privacy: why nothing is uploaded

Most "online PDF" sites are upload services: your file goes to a server, gets processed, and a download link comes back. This viewer is a web page that does the processing itself. When you drop a file, the browser reads it into memory and JavaScript renders it; closing the tab discards it. There is no server-side copy to delete because none was made.

The one thing that is downloaded, not uploaded, is the OCR engine and its language data, fetched once from a CDN when you first click OCR. The document itself is never sent. The privacy page spells this out, and it is the main difference from Smallpdf or iLovePDF, where the upload is the design.

That design also explains the limits: with no server, there is no file-size quota, but a very large scan is bounded by your browser's memory. Hundreds of megabytes of scans will struggle, especially on a phone.

What it does not do, and what to use instead

  • Password-protected PDFs that ask for a password to open: the viewer shows "This PDF is password-protected." Remove the password in Acrobat, Preview or qpdf first; see remove password from PDF.
  • Form fields are displayed but not filled as fields. Type over them with Text.
  • Editing existing text: whiteout the old text and add new text on top; for true text editing use Acrobat or LibreOffice Draw.
  • Convert, compress, split: not here. The conversion guides explain the honest routes, such as Print > Save as PDF for Word to PDF.
  • True redaction: the whiteout box hides content visually; the underlying text stays unless the page is flattened. Acrobat's Redact tool removes it.

Works in Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari on Windows, macOS, Linux and ChromeOS, and on iPad, iPhone and Android in the browser for normal-size files. Platform notes: Mac, Windows, iPhone.

How it compares to the viewer already in your browser

Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari all open PDFs on their own, so the fair question is what this one adds. The short answer: the built-in viewers read; this one also edits and saves, and it does not need an install either.

TaskBuilt-in browser viewerThis viewer

For a one-page read, the built-in viewer is fine and already open. For anything you need to mark up, sign or hand back, this one saves a trip through Acrobat. The detailed side-by-side is on PDF Viewer vs the Chrome PDF viewer, and the broader comparison with free editors is at best free PDF editors.

Frequently asked questions

How do I open a PDF online for free?

Drop the file into the box on this page. It opens in the browser immediately, with no account, install or watermark.

Is this PDF viewer safe for confidential documents?

The file is processed in your browser and never uploaded; closing the tab removes it. Only the OCR engine is downloaded from a CDN.

Can I edit a PDF online with it?

You can highlight, draw, add text and images, sign, whiteout, rotate, delete, reorder and merge pages, then download. Changing the original text is not supported.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

Yes, in the phone's browser for normal-size files. Very long scans can be slow on a phone.

Do I need to install anything?

No. It is a web page. The optional Chrome extension only redirects PDF links into the viewer.

Why does it say my PDF is password-protected?

The file is encrypted and needs a password to open. The viewer cannot decrypt it; remove the password with another tool first.
